Flyswatter Ball

It's a new game in our house...

Happy Belated Birthday Eric!

Eric's birthday was on Tuesday. I'm just slow in posting pictures - I'm trying to spend less time at the computer!

Here are a couple of the "cake"...really it was a bowl of strawberry shortcake...I refused to make a big cake and have it tempt me!

Camryn is chosen...

In the words from her teacher:

Camryn was selected today as our Character of the Month who showed the trait of "Justice and Fairness." Her picture will be taken and placed in the main hallway AND, yes, she'll have "Popsicles With the Principal" next week. She's really working hard and gets along with everyone.

If that doesn't make a mom proud - I don't know what does...I'll take what I can get...even if it's only kindergarten!

Preparing for Battle...

OK - Deep breath.
Let it out - don't worry...I've brushed my teeth...but probably have chocolate coffee breath.
Get very familiar with the armor of God.

GO!

Here we go. Our first North Carolina battle with the school district and Amber's school. They have decided to take her lovely little class for the HEARING impaired, where they are all making progress, into a cross-categorical 3 year old class for 3 year olds who are NOT hearing impaired, but have severe autism or downs or other disabilities. Adding 8 (!!!) 3 year olds to a kindergarten/1st grade class.

Deep breath.

This is a serious battle. Very serious. I'm not a good fighter...I back down amicably a lot. But on so many levels this is not ok! Not for the sweet kids they want to add, and not to the sweet kids who are there.

I don't want to sound like I'm against exposure to other kids with different disabilities - please don't take it that way - because that's not the case...at all. I know they need a place and I know that their parents are probably excited that the school district is making a place for them. But mixing these kids in this kind of an environment isn't beneficial for anyone. Except the school district who doesn't want to pay additional teachers to teach these kiddos appropriately.

Deep breath.

it begins.

100 Things

Camryn doesn't really have homework, but she gets projects....like "Sara" posted below.

Well, now they are doing a project to celebrate the 100th day of school. "Have your child collect 100 things then then display them creatively." That's the basic jist.

OH..."Help your child be creative in deciding what to collect...but let this be THEIR project." Am I the only one who thinks this is a bit ridiculous in many ways for a 5 year old? Maybe I'm just not in the mood to do a 100 piece project right now. And I must say....I have been very good at helping some and helping contain the ideas...but still letting her do most of these.

I gave her ideas like 100 things that look like a "C"....or 100 leaves or 100 horses or 100 pieces of candy or something.

I like the "C" idea. Maybe I'll give her the camera and we'll take a field trip and I'll let her take pictures of everything that she thinks looks like a "C". Then we'll print them out and decorate something with it.

Any other ideas??

Snow Kiddies!

Too much fun today! We are taking full advantage of this special treat from God!

Snow!!

It's the one thing I will miss about the winter in Colorado. My kids have literally spent time crying about there not being any snow....God knows the desires of our hearts.

This morning: 6:30 am!

Cooking in a hurry...

...don't do it!

I have bible study tonight - and my group is in charge of food. So I decide to make something new, yet simple.

But I was having too many distractions, phone calls, kids, splitting headache...things like that. So here's a rundown of what happened....

-recipe called for 3/4 cup of sugar...I did 1 cup...easy enough to scoop out.
-Realized my brown sugar was actually bits of rock-candy...not really, but the brown sugar was so dry that there were pieces as hard as a rock!! I tried to pick most of them out (after blending with the butter)...but then after being on the phone with my sister for 30 minutes, realized the pieces just absorbed the moisture and mixed in fine....I think!
-added 3 cups of flour instead of 1.5 C....I thought I grabbed the 1/2 C measure and grabbed the 1 C....a little mor difficult to scoop out - but got it for the most part.
-Then realized I was supposed to mix the dry ingredients separately and then add them to the sticky, wet ingredients. This wouldn't have been a big deal if I would have used a larger bowl. Instead I sprayed batter all over my counter, my walls and myself trying to unclog my beaters without stopping them.

In the end I think it will work out...although it's suppose to chill for 2 hrs before cutting/baking. I've put them in the freezer to speed up the process...so as long as I don't forget them I'll be good!

The sad thing is...this isn't uncommon cooking practice for me!!! hahahahaha!!

Day off

No one has school today. I don't have much I have to do. The kids slept in...and one slept in really late....so I did too! We were out late last night.

I'm taking total advantage of being home and not having anywhere I need to be. I plan to order my groceries and do puzzles with my kids. If we make it out of the house - great. If not - great.

I have bible study tonight and I'm really looking forward to that. This first week of the Esther study has been wonderful. I have read the bible like never before. It's been great.

Signing for Amber

I had a lady stop me at church today once I had picked up the girls.

She starts telling me that she'd noticed I'd signed with Amber and was curious about the situation. She wanted to get my permission first, but wanted to get the ok from the children's ministry director to interpret for Amber during kids worship!

At this church, they have their Sunday school classrooms, but then all the classes get together for singing and story time sometime during the hour.

This lady, Rebecca, told me that she has s degree in interpreting but hasn't used it in years and has been wanting to get back into it! When she noticed Amber, she thought maybe she could help us out.

Do you know what that does for a mom who has a kids with any kind of extra need? That someone sees that and steps in?! It's almost too much to comprehend...especially the more I thank God for it. The more I realize that HE knew the need for Amber and provided a solution!!

Thank you God for taking care of your little Amber...to give her someone who will help Amber to understand you even more.

Mexico vs. Inauguration

My parents live 2 miles from my dad's work in downtown Washington D.C.

A couple of months ago my dad told my mom to pick anywhere in the world that she wanted to go for about 5 days. The thought of ANYWHERE was appealing until you start subtracting travel days. So - they settled on Cancun, Mexico. My dad used points and mileage and they left yesterday.

They didn't want to stay in DC and fight the crowds. If you can get on a subway - you won't get off...is what dad would say. Plus a good excuse to go travel.

I get one quick text from my mom yesterday after they had arrived at their hotel:

"Mom pushed the red button in customs. It was a bad start. Hotel is beautiful."

I can't wait to hear the rest!!

Meet Sara

Camryn had a project for school where she had to create a snowman but they had to think of different things to use....not your typical hat, scarf, button...etc....

When she was all done I asked if she had a name and Camryn said, "Sara". The name actually took some of the creepiness away from it!! :O)

I didn't help with the creativity too much...I was good about helping gather lots of ideas and then she chose how to use them...

Meet Sara:

weekend of pictures

The camera was out if full-force this weekend. Here's a summary:

Tyler graduated from toddler bed to big-boy bed....this was his reaction:

This was Amber's reaction to Tyler's big-boy bed...not impressed. (I don't know why it's upside down)

I went to find out why it was so quiet...and this is what I found:

Tyler has decided his likes using my camera....

Amber...and her latest fashion experiement...

Amber's napping place....

Me and my honey...

Lazy Saturday

So nice to have a nice, no-plans kind of a day.

We all slept in. We had a lazy breakfast. Eric spent time teaching the kids how to "hike" a football and catch it. Cam was getting pretty good at the catching. I spent time reading books. Eric's outside picking up dog poop before the rains come today. I think I'll be doing laundry, picking up the house, maybe going through some boxes in the garages..maybe not.

Today is a no-plans day. If what I'm doing gets interrupted by a puzzle or play-do...so be it.

the look

oh that yellow gave me a headache each time I looked at it! I liked the idea, but it was too much. This will do for now....I'll keep tweaking!

My little helper

Usually Amber is my helper - always wanting to "help"! I'm finally letting them help more and more.
Last night Camryn was very excited about helping me clean up after dinner. She cleared the table then proceeded to wipe it off, clean the boosters and all the chairs. I kept telling her how much I loved her help.

She said:

"I really like helping you mommy. I'll do it every night and every morning!"
I just laughed and said, "Well thanks, but I won't hold you to that one!"

Excited much?

Amber was up at 3am ready for breakfast and ready to get ready to go to school!!! (I totally relate to you Derek!!).

I finally got her and Tyler back to sleep. But just before 7, both girls were wide awake and ready for their day. I on the other hand had to set 3 alarms...finally by the second one I was remember that we had school!!

They started by coloring in their room. Then they decided (and I totally agreed) that they would clean their rooms and make thier beds...just for the fun of it! Then they saw Tyler's bed was not made so they joined together to make his!

I'm not sure where the energy and drive to be so amazing wonderful this morning came from...but I loved it!!!

It was as if angels were singing from the skies!!

Don't be late

I was just putting the kids to bed and reading books. In the middle of the story Camryn stops me and says, "Mom, make sure you don't make me late for school in the morning, ok?"

I looked at her and just chuckled, "OK Cam!"

Both girls are excited about school starting tomorrow...I guess that's a good thing. I'm excited about getting a routine going again.

I think I may be in love!!

I just did online grocery shopping!!! My kids watched a movie or played while I shopped!! It was only $6....SO WORTH NOT TAKING ALL THREE KIDS!! I go tomorrow morning to pick it up after I drop the girls off at school and after picking up Eric from the airport!!

This may be my new favorite thing!!

Favorite sentence at Christmas

"Mommy, there is a white line on the computer, can you please come take it off?"

How many words is that?? 16 "utterances"!!! to be technical. Amber said this at Christmas time. It keeps coming back to me. I was just dumb founded. It was so perfectly spoke and so clear! A complete stranger could have understood her!

It was my favorite thing I heard during the holidays...that and her trying to sing her interpretation of Jingle Bells mixed with Jingle Bell Rock...

Nothing

I have officially done nothing today. I slept in since I didn't go to bed until 3:15 am. The kids played. I did make them breakfast, then they played and I was on the computer or watching Rock of Love Charm School because I wanted to know who won.

Am I proud of my non-actions today? A little bit. When was the last time I did nothing? I don't know. My kids are happy and not neglected.

I'm still in my pajamas...as are my kids. And it's totally fine by me!

We are getting ready to doing some painting, then they'll be in the tub...which is when I usually get my urge to clean....so I'm sure by the end of the day I'll have made up for the "nothing" that I've done so far.

But hey....it's the last Saturday of Christmas break, Eric's out of town....and we're just hangin!

Post Christmas

Is it done yet? Can I return to my normal chaos? phew...what a whirlwind couple of weeks. It was all great. My folks were here, my brother was here, Eric barely worked. I had time alone, and time saturated with love. I even had a dinner & movie date with Eric.

But now, I'm ready for a couple of quiet days of down time with nowhere to go, nothing to do, no people to have to see. School starts on Monday and I'm looking forward to just a couple of days with me and the kids. I hope I spend my time wisely.

Eric headed to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl today and will be gone until Monday. He and his college roommate and going together, because their other college roommate is one of the coaches for Utah. I'm glad he gets to go and have a guys weekend.

Here are a couple of pictures of Christmas. It was great, but I'm glad it's done.
Decorating the tree:
Look!! I baked with my kids!! It's a rarity around here!!
Advent calendar with Mimi:
Christmas Story with Grandad:
Is there anything cuter?
Seriously...Josh was holding them back until we were ready!
Josh gave Eric a pair of flip flops, and used an old pizza box to wrap them in! It was hysterical!
Using their new umbrellas while watching their new Veggie Tales.
